Jo Belford
In 1989 Jo Belford sent me the original lyrics and a cassette tape of the selected song Reclaim the Night and two others, Womanspirit and Beautiful Friend. Unfortunately in the decades between my original 1991 compilation of the songbook and this 21st century digital version, this is all the material I have managed to retain and I have been unable to retrace the songwriter.

Reclaim the Night
Sadly, the need to speak out and sing about male violence remains as relevant today as it was then and the quality of this song still demands its inclusion in the book.
Reclaim the Night
Song Lyrics
Maybe it’s not safe to stay, it’s dark and I have walked a long way,
But through the fear and doubt, I feel my spirit crying out to
Reclaim the night, I have the right to walk in the moonlight.
I’ve watched the shadows play and danced across the Milky Way,
I have heard the evening’s song and in the magic moments longed to
Reclaim the night, I have the right to walk in the moonlight.
Maybe it’s not safe to stay, it’s dark and I have walked a long way,
But I will feel the wonder still and know that I’m a woman who will
Reclaim the night, I have the right to walk in the moonlight.
