Pat Ann, Kelly & Mace

Pat Ann, Kelly and Mace were one of the many ensembles who formed and performed at women’s concerts and festivals over the decade following International Women’s Year. They sent me this song in 1989. I have since lost touch with them. The song reflects a well known social phenomenon of the era.

Editor’s note: Anecdotally, there seems to have been a marked change in general social attitudes since then where it is quite common to see fathers carrying their babies or wheeling them in strollers. This article by an Immigration Law practice outlines ” Parenting in Australia”

I’ll Be At The Pub Tonight

Song Lyrics

Here’s a golden ring, won’t you be my bride,
Here’s a fancy cage, won’t you step inside
Here’s a lovely kid to be the light of your life,
And I’ll be at the pub tonight

I’ll go out to work just to earn the pay
And you stay home, things are nat’ral that way,
The kid needs someone to bring her up right
And I’ll be at the pub tonight.

What’s that you say, another meetin’ tonight,
You’re leavin’ me and the kid again, you know it ain’t right
How come you pay so much attention to them
They’re just a bunch of lesbians.

I came late the other night,
And there was nothing left in sight;
She took the kid and the colour TV
How come she wants to leave a nice guy like me?

Here’s a golden ring, won’t you be my bride,
Here’s a fancy cage, won’t you step inside
Here’s a lovely kid to be the light of your life,
And I’ll be at the pub tonight.
