Put Away to Die

The song selected in 1989, Put Away to Die, is an individual composition that reflects Ineke’s compassionate approach to her professional experience as an aged care nurse, and the issue of women’s ageing.

Song Lyrics

1. I am sixty-nine and I’ve had a stroke;
I’m going out of my mind in a nursing home;
They say that I am lucky; there are worse places to go.
I am paralyzed down the right side;
I can’t talk any more and express my mind;
I’m an old age pensioner put away to die.

Put away to die, put away to die, too old for rights, too old to fight, put away to die.

2. My days are repetitious but I am occupied
Reading all the women’s magazines that I can find;
My time is most happy when the family drops by.

Put away to die, put away to die, too old for rights, too old to fight, put away to die.

3. Sometimes I laugh at how I tried to be
A law abiding citizen in society,
And here I am, rejected, tucked away, put away to die.

Put away to die, put away to die, too old for rights, too old to fight, put away to die.
